Ideally, a Florida couple whose marriage is coming to an end would be on the same page about ending their relationship. However, it isn’t always the case that both parties going through a divorce will do so in a civil manner. If an individual has a high-conflict personality, it may be more likely that the divorce may become a toxic one. Therefore, it may be necessary to have a strategy to deal with this type of situation.

If it is impossible to have a conversation over the phone or face-to-face, it may be best to limit communication to writing. This means communicating through text messages, emails or messages sent by legal counsel. It may also be a good idea to get a support order or other important agreements in writing as it may reduce the odds the other person reneges on a deal.

In some cases, going to mediation may be helpful. A mediator may help each side stick to agreed upon topics and create an agreement that works for both sides. However, not every mediator can work with individuals or couples who may need structure to get a deal done. Regardless of how a divorce is handled, it is important to leave the children out of it to reduce the odds that they suffer long-term emotional harm.

If an individual is involved in a divorce dispute, it may be worthwhile to consult with legal counsel. Doing so may make it easier to resolve the dispute in a civil manner that may help to preserve relationships both now and in the future. Acting in a civil manner during the divorce process may make it easier for a parent to gain joint custody of a child or otherwise retain access to a son or daughter.
