Many Florida couples, like other couples around the country, look at adoption as their means for becoming parents and having a family. Whether international or domestic, adoption can offer opportunities to adoptees and adoptive parents alike. Some families even choose to adopt children if they can successfully have their own biological children and other families rely solely on adoption.
Many American families have successfully adopted children from other countries over a period of several years. China and Russia are two countries from which a large number of adoptees came. In more recent years, however, new restrictions have made such international adoptions harder than before and the number of these adoption cases has fallen dramatically. The reason for this drop is what is known as the Hague Adoption Convention, a convention recently lauded by the U.S. Secretary of State.
The Secretary of State’s praised the convention during an address for November which is National Adoption Month. During his comments, he discussed the enjoyment his family has received from his niece who was adopted by his sister from China. He also called for an increase in international adoptions, despite the challenges inherent with this due to the Hague Adoption Convention.
Couples that are interested in adopting a child can look at both domestic and international options. Either way, working with an individual attorney can be very helpful during the process, even when working through an agency.
